Active summer holidays fulfilled with different activities every day
Spending summer holidays in Losinj is already our tradition. First time we got there was back in 1997, so this time was our seventh summer here. punta-nova-velika

Every second year old cycling buddies from the same cycling club get together in Losinj with their families, for a summer vacation. They gather from all over the world. Most of our big group stays in hotel “Punta”, a three star hotel close to town of Veli Losinj.  velilosinj102dy7

We prepare rigorously for this vacation, spending days and days in training before we get here. Some are even calling it a “world championships”. We go out on the road every morning and replay our old team tactics. We care who is going to be first at the top of the hill, or who is going to win sprint to the lamp post on the side of the road at the end of each ride. Like kids we still have fun riding our bikes.

This year was no different. We enjoy being together once again after all these years, we still enjoy small pleasures, like stopping at the local store by the rode side, just for a few minutes to have a beer. There is always more than one hand reaching out to pay for the beer. It’s still that “cammeradie” thing – One for all, all for one.

For Vera and me, this year was special, because we had all our canadian family here with us. Sanja and Jeremy, newly weds Sam and Neven, came here after traveling thru the Europe first. My neice Christina came with Leonard after spending 1 ½ year traveling all over the world. This was their last stage before returning home to Edmonton. DSC_6498 Some of the Canadians in Losinj…

Our wives all know each others and they have great time during this short but wonderful vacation. And kids love it too…  This is an active holiday fulfilled with different activities every day. Early in the morning guys go for a two hour bike ride. After our ride we gather by the hotel pool to “review” the highlights from the ride or jokes about it. There is a “race story” every day. We tease those left behind on the local hill, or we talk about the “tricks” used by more experienced (older) guys who would try anything, to stay on the wheel of the stronger guys.

After the bike ride it is our wives who decide where we are going to spend the rest of the day, and the selections are endless. Once at the beach we go swimming or we play cards, volleyball, tennis or just simply soak the sun and enjoy the warm weather.

Our leader Mladen usually organizes a one-day boat excursion, where we explore surrounding islands and taste local Croatian cuisine and vine. This year we visit the island of Susak in addition to our regular route around the island of Losinj. With couple of stops in the remote lagoons for swimming, jumping from the boat, and a lunch on the boat with fresh fish, the day went by in a flush. DSC_6257

Every evening we go to the old town of Veli Losinj, and for a group promenade. Kids and adults alike enjoy late evening ice cream treat at one of many, usually crowded “riva” cafés. Sometimes there is a band playing music and we dance, or we sit down and have “another” beer and just watch the entertainment program on the stage.

This year one of our friends from the Slavonia region of Croatia, organized an event on the beach, under the name of “Taste of Slavonia” or in short “kulenijada”.    DSC_6416

Kulen is a type of flavoured sausage made of minced pork that is traditionally produced in Croatia, Slavonija, and its designation of origin has been protected. The meat is low-fat, rather brittle and dense, and the flavor is spicy. The red paprika gives it aroma and color, and garlic adds spice. The original kulen recipe does not contain black pepper because its hot flavor comes from hot red paprika.

To make event even more interesting we brought beer and the party lasted for most of the day. Some, who didn’t manage the beer well foll asleep on the beach, and that is a BIG mistake. They got their nails done…

The days are flying by, and before you know it’s all over. At the end of vacation, we have had dinner at one of the best local restaurants. Sea food platter is group’s favorite with sea food variety prepared first class. Of course there is always good vine to go with fish and we all have lot’s of fun.

DSC_6213See you next time…

When the time comes to say good bay we always say it “until next time” as we are sure that we’ll come back again.

Have a good and healthy season.
