9th Anniversary

By: Zdenko Kahlina

‘Zdenko’s Corner’… it’s been nine years already!
Nine years ago I created my own web page ‘Zdenko’s Corner’. Words can’t express how that silly, simple, little thing changed my life. Thanks to everyone who has read, liked, shared and commented on my posts! Other thanks to everyone who just stopped by and took a quick peek without reading or leaving comments. You all are the best!

EDMONTON ICE District_2017Merry Christmas and a very Happy New Year!!

I have now been writing blogs for more than nine years. Sometimes it feels like just yesterday, when I started tinkering with blog stories. Other times it feels like I’ve been a blogger forever!

Since the beginning many people asked me why I am doing it. I’d like to say that I write blogs first for myself and second for everyone else, and that’s still true. Nine years doesn’t sound like a lot of time, but it’s fascinating to read the crazy things that I wrote only several years ago. I really have changed quite a lot in that time! That said it certainly is nice to have readers and more than 3,000 of them on a daily basis! Not only do you keep me motivated (and correct me when I get things wrong), you have also taught me an awful lot over the years. I have met so many new people and learned so many things that I just don’t think I would have without this blog. I really appreciate all of the relationships and opportunities that writing here has afforded me!

Blogging also helps me improve with my English. When I first arrived in Canada (from Croatia), I didn’t know English well. I was afraid of making spelling mistakes when writing even short sentences at work. My blogging changed all this. You can still notice my English is not perfect, but at least now I am not afraid of making mistakes. I accepted that I will never be perfect, because English will always be my second language and Croatian my first.

biker with lights3I wish you a ‘New Bike’ Christmas!

About Zdenko’s Corner
Keeping track of by now more than 1,160 (!) blogs and stories, emailing my contributors, designing graphics, editing stories and answering emails/comments from my growing readership of 30,000+ monthly loyal fans – while at the same time maintaining regular job, family and bike riding, it’s sometimes too easy to get stuck in the trenches. So as I am approaching ‘Zdenko’s Corner’ 8th birthday, this is a great time to up-periscope and take stock of just where the heck am I, how far I’ve come, and where I’m headed with this blog site.

Future
I’m going to continue to use my site for travel blogging, writing about sport of cycling (my passion), and writing about my family and my heritage. This will include memories about my home town Zagreb and Croatia – country where I was born.

Next year will be an awesome year at Zdenko’s Corner – I promise to bring you more of the content you won’t find on other sites – and if you see me somewhere, please say hello or at least visit my web site and leave a comment, after reading or just browsing my blogs.

Edmonton panoramic1May Peace and Goodwill be your gift at Christmas!

I expect the next year to be equal to this year or even better. I promise to bring you more content that you will not find anywhere else. Next year big thing for me and my readers will be publishing and describing my entire cycling career, year after year (for now only on Croatian language). During my cycling career in the 60s and 70s I kept a diary of all my training rides and races, so I still know many details from that time. Each race and every bike ride has its own story. When I read these records today, it is that with pleasure I recall all these memories. I have so much material that I could write a book about all those adventures on the bike, but the question is who would be interested in reading it all in today’s time. New generations do not really care much about our past, so I decided to publish all of my experiences here – on ‘Zdenko’s Corner’.

Blogging is fun for me, like biking. I take it seriously, but it’s still fun, and for me fun usually means dumb, so I can’t guarantee that anything here will actually be worth reading. I can promise to ramble, preach, moan, whine, comment, brag for no apparent reason, and normally not say anything of too much importance. So yeah, hope you enjoy and THANKS for reading.

Merry Christmas (2)Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!!

Have a good and healthy season.
