Jenn and Sanja’s diary: Hello Zagreb!

 Home Away From Home
Sanja and her friend Jenn decided to take some time off from the work and all daily routines here in Edmonton, and travel the world for a while. I will publish blogs about their traveling adventures, so return to this site again to read more. They left Edmonton in mid July 2010 for a short visit to London, and than headed off for capital city of Croatia – Zagreb.

Life story

By: Zdenko Kahlina

How I became a prolific blogger and learned to get beyond school essays
Some people think I am a journalist. My friends ask ME how I can possibly write as much as I do (on my blog), given all the responsibilities that I have. That’s because I have published (so far) more than 1,000 blogs on my web site. My REAL day job is as computer programmer for a big insurance company in Edmonton and blogging is just my hobby, which I discovered very late in my life…

Ride into history this summer!
Do you know that Edmonton has its own street car? Last summer during the Fringe festival, because of the parking problem in Old Strathcona, my wife and I decided to ride the streetcar.

My daughter just turned 30-something!

By: Zdenko Kahlina

My daughter just turned 30… something!
My daughter Sanja will turn 30-something in few days. I am as old as dirt! I originally wrote this on her 30th birthday, but decided to re-post because I still feel the same. The last 30-something years have been a journey that I wouldn’t have missed for anything. I am not exactly sure where the time went. We sure squeezed in an awful lot of fun though, didn’t we?

Life in Edmonton

By: Melissa Milakovic

The whisperings, whirlings, wonderings, and writings of a dreamer, a dancer, a drawer, and a darling.
I fell asleep thinking about how easily people get swallowed into their current obsessions or, better yet, swallowed into whatever world they most comfortably relate to. Now that I’m thinking about it, I should have started writing this last night when this idea was at its prime. I think there is a Seinfeld episode about this. I’ll do my best to recapture these thought bubbles.

40th Anniversary: 1974 – 2014 (April 27)

Ruby Wedding Anniversary “Speech”
I’ve volunteered to say ‘a few words’ for this occasion and the only way I know how to do this, was to create a new blog on my web site! However, to cram 40 years into ‘a few words’ proved too much of a tall order and I’m afraid I’ve used a few more than a few in this speech, so please bear with me…

WHY I DON’T WANT ANY MORE PRESENTS FOR MY BOYS.
We’re pretty lucky in our family. I can cross off three out of four birthdays in May alone! Then Christmas and the fourth birthday (the youngest) are both taken care of in December. This makes for a lot less time worrying about buying presents and a lot more time thinking about how much crap stuff we have.

Family life

By: Zdenko Kahlina

Our daughter moved to Ontario, so we are Empty Nesters now!
We are living in an empty nest: Wasn’t this the goal in our life? When children are young, we teach them to tie their own shoes, fix their own sandwiches, swim, ride bicycle, and eventually how to drive and do their own laundry. Parents spend time teaching their children in hopes they will be independent, productive young adults.

Life in Croatia

By: Cody McClain Brown

Why my Punica (mother-in-law) is like a drug dealer
In another life I could cook real meals with fresh ingredients. I entertained friends in a clean house. I woke up daily, made coffee, put on ironed dress-shirts and permanently pressed pants before driving myself to work. I came home, made dinner and tidied up the house. In this other life I was a well on my way to becoming a fully-fledged, competent, functional adult.

My mother passed away two years ago – on Mothers Day! It is hard to believe two years have gone by already. There is not one day that passed I did not think about her. It has definitely been a very difficult two years for me and my family. We still talk about her and her life at our family gathering. Here is what I wrote about her last year:

Samantha and Neven’s story…
Neven met Sam at the going away party for his good friend Elisabetta Chiodo, on September 23, 2006. Elisa was moving permanently to Vancouver, so on that day she had a party at the night club called “The Bank”. She invited her friends and co-workers to come and party with her one last time in Edmonton. There was a nice group of people and everybody started drinking and dancing and mingling with other people at the bar.

When you were just a pup, and you were new to home and heart, I used to laugh so hard and pick you up and hold you squirming and struggling my arms and whisper to you “Dina, I love you this much”.
